Abstract

Potato production systems are a social, economic, and environmental activity in the high Andean rural areas of Peru, making it necessary to evaluate complementary activities for producers to improve their economic income and quality of life. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sustainability of wild blackberry (WB) production as a living fence in potato cultivation in the high Andean areas of northern Peru. First, 98 potato production units (PPUs) with WB living fences were characterized using structured surveys that included social, economic, and environmental aspects. The selected variables were analyzed using multivariate methods for the characterization of the PPUs. Second, sustainability was evaluated using structured surveys of producers with a focus on sustainability. The results allowed the identification of three types of rural producers, whose management practices were differentiated by monthly income, plot size, blackberry yield and price, and the cost of daily labor. The production units (UPPs) with WB hedges registered an average sustainability score and an overall sustainability index of 56.7%. Critical points were identified that will allow for the development of strategies to improve the sustainability levels of this agricultural practice. WB hedges provide additional income for rural farmers in the Amazonas region, and also help conserve the biodiversity of both wild blackberry species and pollinators, indicating that this activity practiced by producers is sustainable.
