Inteligencia artificial para la conservación forestal: identificación de especies maderables mediante MobileNetV3 y mecanismos de atención en Ecuador

Resumen

La tala ilegal y la deforestación —tráfico de madera— representan amenazas críticas para la sostenibilidad de los ecosistemas forestales en el sur de Ecuador, lo que exige herramientas de control más eficientes y accesibles. Este trabajo presenta un modelo basado en inteligencia artificial (IA) que utiliza la arquitectura MobileNetV3 —especializada en la detección de patrones en imágenes y optimizada para dispositivos de bajo poder de cómputo— para la identificación anatómica de cuatro especies maderables: cedro (Cedrela odorata), nogal (Juglans neotropica), faique (Prosopis pallida) y guayacán (Handroanthus chrysanthus). Los resultados evidenciaron un desempeño adecuado y estable en diferentes escenarios de validación, incluyendo condiciones controladas de laboratorio y entornos con mayor variabilidad y complejidad, alcanzando una precisión del 81% y del 80%, respectivamente, lo que demuestra que el modelo aprendió a discriminar las especies a partir de características anatómicas como vasos, radios y anillos. Se concluye que la solución basada en IA constituye una herramienta tecnológica para apoyar la lucha contra el tráfico de madera y, al mismo tiempo, un valioso recurso didáctico para la formación de futuros profesionales en computación, gestión forestal y conservación ambiental.
