    Sociólogo y antropólogo. Profesor emérito en la State University of New York at Buffalo. Ha sido peruanista desde 1951. Ha publicado entre otros Modernization and the shrinkage of myth: magical diagnosis and curing in Vicos, Peru (1975), El caso de los becerros hambrientos y otros ensayos de antropología económica peruana (1991), Vicisitudes del discurso del desarrollo en el Perú: una etnografía sobre la modernidad del proyecto Vicos (2000), Repensando el discurso andinista (2010).
