Abstract

This article examines the regeneration of Plaza Italia (Barrios Altos, Historic Center of Lima) as an applied case study in heritage public space intervention. Using a mixed-methods approach —historical-morphological analysis, pedestrian microclimatic assessment via the UTCI index, wind analysis, and systematic use observation— the study identifies deficits in continuous shade, pedestrian connectivity, and conditions for sustained occupancy. Results reveal zones of moderate thermal stress (26–32 °C in February) and wind corridors constrained by perimeter building volumes. Building on this diagnosis, the article proposes the technological palimpsest as an operative intervention model: a layered-reading framework that yields verifiable design criteria —contextually placed street furniture, effective shade strategies, thermally performative surface materials, and circular material cycles— compatible with the site’s heritage status. The study concludes that climate resilience and urban memory are not competing objectives, but complementary dimensions of a sustained, verifiable, and adaptable practice of care.
