Abstract

The work proposes some reflections regarding the writing process of Sab (1841), by Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda (1814-1873) ?a novel censored in colonial Cuba?, and the limits of the writing of the “subaltern” characters Carlota and the slave. An interdisciplinary methodology is used that takes advantage of historical and literary sources. In principle, the production context and initial reception of the work are reviewed; Then, recent research on the work is analyzed from a gender perspective.
