https://revistas.pucp.edu.pe/index.php/espinela/article/view/30343

In the 19th century, the role of Spanish as an identity symbol in the new American nations was uncertain. Although it was the language inherited from a recently overthrown monarchy, its ability to unite and represent the emerging republics sparked various debates. Thinkers like Juan León Mera, Andrés Bello, Rufi no José Cuervo, and Clorinda Matto de Turner discussed the role of Spanish in the independence process. This work analyzes some perspectives on Hispanicization in America, exploring 19th-century linguistic and literary views on Castilianization and the use of Spanish within the context of the transition toward independent republics.
Fernando Prieto Rojas

https://revistas.pucp.edu.pe/index.php/espinela/article/view/30344

The text explores the power of language and its relationship with the state and biopolitics, arguing that words, though seemingly neutral, are inherently powerful tools. Language, always carrying an excess, becomes a means for state control, constructing and regulating lives by imposing limits and exclusions. Theories from Roland Barthes, Judith Butler, and Antonio Negri illustrate how language can be both oppressive and resistant. This interplay of forces reveals language as a potential source of transformation and defiance against power.
Pablo Unda Unda

https://revistas.pucp.edu.pe/index.php/espinela/article/view/30345

The essay proposes that in Julio Ortega's novel Adiós, Ayacucho, a confrontation with hegemonic-Western rationality takes place from an alternative rationality that comes from the Andean worldview. The analysis is based on decolonial theory to explain the presence of this other way of thinking, through the incarnation of the protagonist, Alfonso Cánepa, in two mythical-religious figures: the Andean condemned man and the Inkarrí. It also makes use of Mijaíl Bajtín conceptualization of carnival to delve into the processes of inversion, restitution and renewal present.
Kevin Rivera Rodríguez

https://revistas.pucp.edu.pe/index.php/espinela/article/view/30346

This paper analyses Magdalena Chocano's book of poems Objetos de distracción (2016) in dialogue with her earlier books Poesía a ciencia incierta (1982) and Estratagema en claroscuro (1986). The aim is to identify and explore the different ways in which the notions of subject, time and history are represented in this work. It is argued that Chocano's poetry questions the conventions of representation of the poetic subject, time and history. It shows the transition from the construction of a paradoxical subject —visionary and vulnerable— to a decentralised voice without identity marks. It also investigates the configuration of a discontinuous temporality in the author's later poetry, which shares with her earlier works the rejection of a homogeneous and linear time. It is proposed that her poetry shows a fragmentary and discontinuous vision of history, against the current of epic or totalising discourses
Matías Ruiz Echegaray

https://revistas.pucp.edu.pe/index.php/espinela/article/view/30347

This essay proposes that in Manuel Puig's El beso de la mujer araña (1976), elements of contemporary mass culture —such as cinema or boleros— are used to create a space of intimacy and exchange that successfully subverts preconceived notions —such as the prison as a space of oppression or hegemonic masculinity as the sole standard of virility—and allows for closeness between disparate social groups. To understand this, we start from the idea that Puig's novel is a product framed within postmodernity, which utilizes mass culture products not as mere aesthetic additions but as a fundamental part of its proposal. Mikhail Bakhtin’s ideas, particularly those related to carnivalesque literature, help to interpret the subversions that unfold in the novel.
Said Ilich Trujillo Valverde

https://revistas.pucp.edu.pe/index.php/espinela/article/view/30348

In recent years, the short stories of Ecuadorian writer María Fernanda Ampuero have garnered increasing attention from readers, as well as from a specialized audience interested in studying her work. This brief essay aims to enrich the discussion by proposing an analysis of the short story "Ali," published in Pelea de gallos (2018). We examine the main narratological elements of the story to demonstrate how, by presenting two simultaneous stories within the same family, the author provides a fierce critique of Guayaquil society, highlighting its flaws: hypocrisy, racism, classism, and an oppressive and perverse patriarchy that permeates all social classes.
Belinda Palacios
