Abstract

The work analyzes chapter I, titled “Tokyo”, of the travel book El Japón heroico y galante by Enrique Gómez Carrillo, published in 1912 by the Renacimiento publishing house of Madrid. The book is, in turn, a compilation of chronicles from two previous books by Gómez Carrillo: De Marsella a Tokio (1906) and El alma japonesa (1907). The study explores the author's ideas about what that “Japón real y delicioso” would be like that the Guatemalan modernist longed to find on his trip to the country of the Rising Sun and which he subsequently recreates in this journalistic and literary text.
