Approaches to small arms and light weapons control: Pending tasks in the field of implementation of international instruments in Peru

Abstract

This article analyzes the importance of the control of small arms and light weapons through the regulation established in various international instruments. Thus, the initial premise of this paper is that the absence of an adequate control of firearms negatively affects the respect for human rights and international humanitarian law. At the same time, the article explores two situations that have built awareness  about the suitability of the arms control system in Peru. From this, the need to link these concepts is generated through important instruments such as the Arms Trade Treaty. Finally, in light of the revised international instruments, we highlight what are the fundamental elements whose implementation would guarantee an adequate control of firearms in Peru.
