The Destiny of the Shaman After Death Among the Matsigenka of Bajo Urubamba (Cuzco, Peru)

Conceptions about the fate of the vital principle of individuals, commonly called the “soul”, are central to the religious representations of the Matsigenka people of eastern Peru (pre-Andean Arawak). The objective of this work is to shed light on the death of individuals, focusing on the death of those who hold the status of shamans, a topic that has not been addressed by the ethnographic literature of this indigenous group. This article is based on information gathered through techniques such as participant observation, interviews, and the recording of mythology related to death, and especially that of shamans, in the Lower Urubamba region and its tributaries, the Picha and Camisea rivers (Megantoni district, Cusco). The research was conducted in two stages: the first from 1996 to 2006, and the second during 2018. The final destination of shamans after death is to inhabit the Enoku sky with their auxiliary spirits, the Saankariite. Exceptionally, there are shamans of great knowledge, who, by gaining greater knowledge regarding the relationships between humans and non-humans, as well as the use of psychotropic substances, shaped the current Matsigenka territory, defended against the attack of malevolent beings, facilitated a good final destiny for the deceased, and contributed to obtaining divine gifts; therefore, after their death, in addition to remaining in the collective memory, they accessed the empyrean along with the Tasorintsi deities.
