Interculturality in health: reflections from an indigenous experience in the Peruvian Amazon

She has just finished her postgraduate studies in the Master in Sociology and Anthropology of the Federal University of Pará, Brazil, with a scholarship from the Organization of American States. Her research experience focuses on intercultural health, Latin American indigenous movements, territory, and extractive industries. Her master's thesis is titled: A doenca do Petróleo: Extracao petrolera e os Achuar do rio Corrientes in the Peruvian Amazon. She has just published the book "Intertwining rivers: systematization of the pedagogical proposal for the training of technical nurses in intercultural health of AIDESEP" written with María Amalia Pesantes and published by the Institute of Peruvian Studies and the Intercultural Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (2017 ).

    Graduated in Anthropology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Master in International Development, Master in Public Health and PhD in Medical Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh. Her research areas are intercultural health, indigenous health, primary health care for vulnerable populations, and access to health for people with chronic diseases. She is a consultant for the NGO Salud Sin Límites Perú for indigenous health issues and an associate researcher of CRONICAS at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. Among her most recent publications is the 2017 book "Entrecruzando ríos" written with Cynthia Cárdenas Palacios and published by the IEP and AIDESEP. Her most recent articles are:

Advisor to the National Directive Council of the Peruvian Amazonian indigenous organization AIDESEP (Inter-Ethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle) between the years 2000 - 2015; Designer and implementer of training projects for indigenous professionals in Amazon intercultural health of the AIDESEP Indigenous Health Program (PSI) in Atalaya, Bagua and Nauta. Coordinator of the Diploma Training of Trainers in Intercultural Health of the Postgraduate Unit of the Faculty of Education of the UNMSM. Author of various essays on interculturality and interdisciplinarity in the curricula and books on Didactics of the Historical-Social Sciences. Teacher union leader founder of SUTEP and member of the national leadership of the historical strikes of 1978 and 1979.

Abstract

This article examines the main characteristics of the proposal on interculturality developed by an indigenous Amazonian organization of Peru for the training of indigenous youth as nurse technicians in intercultural health. It shows how the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (Aidesep) appropriates the concept of interculturality, reconfigures and reconstructs it. Based on internal documents, institutional publications, testimonies of graduates of the intercultural health program, leaders and members of the technical team of the Indigenous Health Program of AIDESEP, we analyze the construction and implementation of the concept of interculturality. We also examin the way in which an indigenous organization becomes a proponent of interculturality, building an indigenous response for the training of health professionals prepared to provide culturally appropriate health services to the indigenous population. The proposal for the training of nurse technicians in intercultural health shows that it is possible for critical interculturality to move from discourse to practice when indigenous peoples develop their own intercultural proposals.
