The presence of depression in the acute phase of schizophrenia is evaluated, and the clinical and psychosocial characteristics that can be associated with depression are identified. Participants included 73 patients that were admitted to the acute services of the Psychiatric Hospital of Havana, given that depression is a symptom in a significant amount of the patients with schizophrenia, 35.6% of the patients presented clinically significant symp- toms, and these were related significantly with unemployment, the separation of loved ones and a greater number of re-hospitalizations. It is important to consider depression and its causes to develop effective treatment strategies.Downloads
