Solidarity in times of crisis: A latent profile approach

Solidarity is a multifaceted phenomenon whose forms and underlying motivations become especially salient in contexts of economic crisis. This article examines distinct expressions and motivations for solidarity with those economically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a sample of 395 Argentine participants, we conducted a latent profile analysis of self-reported solidarity behaviours. Then, we examined their associations with theoretically relevant antecedents, namely community identification, personal and vicarious economic hardship, and poverty attributions measured with a novel scale. The results revealed three solidarity profiles and their possible motivations. Compared to the low-solidarity profile, high-solidarity profiles were characterized by stronger community identification and by knowing individuals who were economically affected by the pandemic. However, the two high-solidarity profiles differed in their expressions of political and welfare solidarity, which may be explained by differences in poverty attributions.
