Author Guidelines

Guidelines for the submission of articles

Articles 

Minimal length: 5000 words 

Maximal length: 8000 words 

Each article should include an introduction with the presentation of the proposal; an argumentative development that supports the proposal; conclusions that sum up the text’s content and promote further discussions; and bibliographical references of all the texts quoted in the article. 

Book reviews 

Maximal length: 3000 words 

Each book review should include the name of the author, the title of the volume and the complete information of the edition. The review should contextualise the position of the work in the intellectual itinerary of the author and reconstruct its main ideas and arguments. The author of the book review is expected to offer a critical evaluation of the work and not a mere summary. 

Documents 

There is no minimal length for documents submitted to this section. The maximal length of the texts should be 8000 words. 

The following documents may be submitted to this section: (a) manuscripts that result from conferences, congresses or symposia, in accordance with the journal’s focus and scope; (b) translations and critical editions of primary sources, accompanied by a contextualising commentary that shows their importance for the field. 

General criteria for all manuscripts 

-      Format: Word (doc. or docx.)

-      Font: Bookman Old Style, size 12

-      Left-aligned text

-      The author’s information should not appear in any part of the text.

-    The first page of the text should include a summary with a maximal length of 200 words, including 3 to 5 keywords. 

-     Diagrams and illustrations should be sent in a separate file, in image formats such as jpg., png. or similar ones, with a resolution higher than 300 ppi or dpi, with a size of 7,5 cm or more. 

References quoted in the text 

References of citations should be included as footnotes. The footnote call should be placed exactly where the citation is being made, as superscript. References should be given in the following format: 

-  In the case of quotations, the main details (author, title, page number) should be given. For example: Strayer, J. and H. Gatzske, The Development of Civilization, p. 23. 

- When the referenced work is the one referenced in the immediately previous note, use  ibid.  

Bibliography 

 -   Please include at the end of the article a bibliography listing only the texts used in the body text under the title “Bibliography”. The list of publications should be ordered alphabetically according to the following instructions: 

Work from one/several authors: 

Strayer, J. and H. Gatzske, The Development of Civilization, 2nd. edition, New York: Hardcourt Brace and World, 1961. 

Work that is part of a compilation: 

Menéndez, R., “La propuesta utilitarista”, in: Granados, E. (ed.), Debates éticos contemporáneos, Mexico City: Siglo XXI, 1998, pp. 234-267. 

Article that is part of a publication: 

Nussbaum, M., “La ética de la virtud: una categoría equívoca”, in: Areté, XI, 2 (1999), pp. 573-613. 

Camino, F., “La pregunta por la pregunta”, in: Areté, XXXIV, 1 (2022), pp. 9-19. https://doi.org/10.18800/arete.202201.001 

Texts that  do not fulfil these requirements will not be considered for the evaluation process. 

Checklist for the preparation of submissions 

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check that their submission fulfils all the following requirements. Submissions which do not meet these requirements will be returned to the authors. 

1.- The manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently being evaluated by another journal. 

2.- The web addresses or the DOI are included for the references when possible. 

3.- The text has a simple line spacing. The size of the font is 12. Italics are used instead of underlining (except for URL addresses). All illustrations, figures and tables are included in the text in their corresponding place. 

4.- The text meets the bibliographical and style requirements indicated in the Authors’ Guidelines.
