This study examines the relationship between exogroup threat perception and intercultural sensitivity in attitudes toward multiculturalism among workers in Chile’s Valparaíso region. Since most immigrants are of working age, they may be perceived as competitors, influencing nationals’ attitudes. Using a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional design, a survey was applied to 217 workers (59.4% women, mean age 37.6). Results show that symbolic and realistic threats negatively correlate with multicultural attitudes, while intercultural sensitivity correlates positively. Intergroup contact predicts favorable attitudes, but its effect disappears when intercultural sensitivity is included. Findings suggest the quality of intercultural communication, expressed through respect and mindfulness, matters more than contact frequency. Addressing perceived threats is key for positive host society attitudes.
