A psychometric instrument designed to measure five stages of moral reasoning was administered to males and females in five grade level groups. Older Ss scored higher on the more advanced moral reasoning stage scales; younger subjects on the lower stages. Females outscored males on stage four (obedience to law); males outscored females on stage three (conformity to role expectations and caring for friends and family). lmplications of these fmdings for measurement, research and school application are discussed.
