In 1970, Häberle obtained his habilitation at Freiburg im Breisgau, with the work Öffentliches Interesse als juristisches Problem. He was a substitute professor at Tübingen and a professor of law at Marburg. He subsequently transferred to the universities of Augsburg and Bayreuth. He also acted as visiting professor at the University of St. Gallen (from 1982 to 1999).
