Abstract

Reexamining Ñawimpukyo: New Contributions to the Study of Huarpa Culture and the Early Intermediate Period at Ayacucho Valley

The Ñawinpukyo Archaeological Project began renewed research activities at the important site of Ñawinpukyo. Ayacucho, traditionally considered the capital of a Huarpa culture polity during the Early Intermediate Period (ca. 200 BC-AD 550). New Huarpa architectural shapes, formerly unknown, and probably of a ceremonial nature, have been excavated. Archaeological contexts corresponding to the transition between Huarpa and Huari times confirm the important rol played by this site in the cultural development of Ayacucho.
